“I’m sorry, I really do have to go, I just got paged…” Jonathan stood up from the table and brought his half-empty teacup to the sink. Then he went back towards the bedroom and found his shirt and shoes in a pile on the floor.
“That’s alright,” Ben reassured him. “Here, your tie’s on the lamp.” Jonathan gratefully took it and swung it around his neck.
“Thanks,” he picked up his jacket. “For the coffee, and…everything.”
“You’re welcome.” Benjamin’s smile was honest.
“I’ll see you.” Jonathan was halfway out of the door when a hairy arm stopped him.
“When?” Benjamin asked.
“Uh…I don’t know.” Jonathan said. “Why?”
“I want to see you again. As soon as possible.”
“Oh.” Jonathan had to stop himself from saying, “Really?”
“I’m sorry.” Benjamin suddenly withdrew from the doorway. “Just go, I didn’t mean to freak you out or anything.”
“No, you didn’t, it’s just that…nobody’s ever said that to me before.”
“Nuh-uh.” Ben snorted in disbelief.
“Yeah-huh.” Jonathan nodded vigorously.
“That’s ridiculous,” Ben said. “How could someone have you in their home for a night and not want you back again the very next?”
“Really?” Jonathan didn’t close his mouth in time. Without thinking he stepped back inside and let the door close behind him. His phone began beeping again but he ignored it.
“Really.”
Later that afternoon, when he finally made his way to work, exhausted, he was written up for insubordination but couldn’t wipe the grin off of his face.
